Black Angels Over Tuskegee
April 16, 2012

Students from Tuskegee Institute Middle School attended the Off-Broadway play, "Black Angels Over Tuskegee" by playwright Layon Gray.  The award winning play is based on true events.   Six men explore their collective struggle with Jim Crow, their intelligence, patriotism, dreams of an inclusive fair society, and brotherhood as they become the first African-American fighter pilots in the U.S. Army Air Force. The play is based on the stories of the Tuskegee Airmen and exposes the men who exhibited the courage to excel, in spite of all the overwhelming odds against them.

Students attending the play were: Schuyler Rogers, Jalil Surge, Marqui Harris, Kamary Sexton, Amber Hooks, , Shaiquetta Grant, Cambryana Burton, Jeré Armstead, and Zekari Gordan.  MCBOE employees who chaperoned the event are:  Camille Floyd, Terri Holcey, Monica Rogers, Alicia Campbell, Rosie O’Neal, Norma Hooks, Rosa Henderson, and Gwen Collier.  All attendees agree that the play is worth seeing as it is enthralling, educational, exciting and entertaining. All of the actors are talented and friendly, and agreed to talk with the students and take photographs after the production.  The cast mentioned that talks are underway for them to return to Tuskegee during Homecoming weekend to present the play again.  Don’t miss it!

Special thanks are extended to Mr. James Arrington, Development Officer for Athletic Programs at Tuskegee University and Tuskegee University President Dr. Gilbert Rochon for hosting the group and to our awesome Superintendent Dr. Jacqueline A. Brooks for allowing the students to attend this educational and cultural masterpiece.
