On December 18, 2012 the Career and Technical Education Programs' Division celebrated one cause; Collaboration. In attendance were Career Tech Teachers from all of our secondary schools, Support Staff, and Representative Pebblin Warren. All were present and excited to celebrate our working together as we move Career and Technical Education in Macon County to greater heights.
Rep. Warren spoke towards Career Development, Workforce Readiness, and Job Embedded Teaching and Learning Skills to include College Readiness. All were well addressed topics which reflect on the lives of many of our CT Staff who hold first and second careers based on their multiple skills readiness/academic credentials. This is exactly what we challenge our students to achievement; skills which lead to professional employment. The delicious menu was provided by our School Nutrition Program - Tuskegee Institute Middle Schools which is an extension career choice from our Family and Consumer Science Programs.
Dr. Lowe gave a program overview of his expectations for the department since his appointment as Education Coordinator on last summer. "We must re-educate the community that Vocational Education is now Career Tech. These are NEW Jobs leading to Stable and Equitable Careers for ALL People. This is no longer an isolated choice for job training and employment. It is now a open option for everyone, not just minorities and rural communities".
As we fellow shipped with each other, we also remember those who are no longer with us. We will never forget the reason for the season. Love, Hope, Joy, and Peace and how it should be shared constantly and without ceasing. This is what we expect of ourselves and others, in short we expect it of our students. Again, on behalf of the entire department we extend you Holiday Greetings.
Career and Technical Education - Learning That Works In Alabama.......
Thanks to a couple of teachers (who also happen to be identical twins), some co-operative parents and the uniform policy at George Washington Carver Elementary school, The Tuskegee News was invited to Carver to document eight pairs of twins (nine pairs, if you count the teachers)! It was wonderful to see smiling faces, in duplicate, smiling back at you!

Ms Dix (I couldn't tell which one it was) said there are actually 12 pairs of twins at Carver, but they only had photo consent forms for the twins pictured.
As a person who grew up with twins, there are many, many events that bring smiles and laughter to our family, even today. It is a beautiful thing to observe the special interactions that twins share with that one other special person in the world!
Tuskegee Institute Middle School hosted a "T.I.M.S. Talent Showcase", on 12/18/2012, featuring the 7th and 8th Grades at Tuskegee Institute Middle School.
Miss Kaylan Wright and Mr. Xzavier McIntosh introduced the participants to parents and guests and the program took off from then! The audience was treated to a showcase of talent featuring singing, rapping, skits and plays as well as music by the TIMS Band Members.
Mrs. Rosemary Wright, Principal, gave the closing remarks, rounding out a very enjoyable Christmas-themed event

Dr. Bernard LaFayette will be in the district tomorrow for an Orientation to Non-Violence Training. In light of the 20 innocent lives that were lost in a school setting, plus the courageous teachers and administrators who lost their lives while performing their duties, we are very fortunate to have Dr. LaFayette agree to offer his training to the Macon County School System.
Dr. Jacqueline Brooks, Superintendent, is hoping each school can send two or more persons. Parents, representatives from the PTA, SGA Presidents and Officers, elected officials, and members of the law enforcement community are invited to attend.
The training will take place at the Transportation Building Conference Room (diagonally across the street from Booker T. Washington High School), on 12/18/2012, at 9:00 AM.
Mr. Judd Davis of WSFA News visited Booker T. Washington High School to recognize Ms Monica Hasley as a Class Act. This is quite a feat by Ms Hasley, as the Class Act award is a recognition bestowed upon a teacher by the teacher's students! Ms Hasley teaches Language Arts at Booker T. Washington. She transferred to from the Middle School to the High School. Congratulations Ms Hasley for being recognized as a Class Act!
Mr. John Curry, Technology Coordinator, hosted a Technology Orientation Session and Symposium on December 12, 2012 at the Macon County School System Transportation Center in Tuskegee, Al.
Present were members of the School System Technology Team. Mr. Curry spoke first, to set the tone and warm the invited guests of the purpose of the brief symposium. System Plans and Assessments, the System Technology Plan, the Alabama Technology Course of Study and grant-writing were the topics Mr. Curry covered, giving a complete overview of the session.
Mr. James Cooper, Director of Campus Computing at Tuskegee University spoke next. Mr. Cooper discussed "Using Technology Tools to Improve Instruction and Classroom Integration", a vitally important topic in that sharing ideas and techniques with others prevents others from investing time, tools and resources in obsolete ways and means. Mr. Cooper further discussed trends in technology.
After a short break, Dr. Marshall Winters, the Director of Educational Services of Dynamic Strategies, LLC spoke of the concept of Project Based Learning and Technology. and a special sharing of grant-writing. Dr. Winters pledged his support in Grant-writing efforts in Macon County.
Dr. Jacqueline Brooks concluded with her vision of technology in public education, and what she, as an education professional, foresees in the very-near future.
The Technology Team was given a gift pack, containing tools they will need as Technology leaders at their respective schools.
Mr. Curry provided a scrumptious meal right after the symposium.

Macon County Public Schools continues to develop authentic relationships. AFCEA - Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association Education Foundation has for the past three years invested in STEM Initiatives in Macon County. Robotics Education has been on the forefront of their funding allocations. Students in grades 9-12 have traditionally participated. Now from this new award of $10,000.00, students in grades 6-12 will be engaged in STEM specifically Pre-Robotics Engineering Education and Programming. A concept of "Challenges" will be developed to encourage students, parents, and community with the guidance of the teacher to embrace scientific discovery (hands-on).
Our students are some of the brightest students to work with. The various and multifaceted learning opportunities that interface a classroom via projects such as these often outpour enormous academic outcomes. We will continue to create learning opportunities for all students. Career and Technical Education in Macon County has welcomed new programs and Robotics is one of them. Early exposure and implementation will be a major factor in the vast production of future Scientist, Engineers, Program Developers, and mostly 21st Century Educators. On behalf of the Macon County Public School System Dr. Jacqueline A. Brooks - Superintendent accepted the 10K award, Dr. Camille Floyd - Academic Specialist accepted a 1K award for Special Populations Development, and Dr. Melvin A. Lowe, III - Education Coordinator accepted a 1K award for STEM Teacher Development. A total of 12K was presented by Ms. Charisse Stokes - AFCEA Education Foundation President. Together we will keep the pathways for bright minds well lighted.
Students from Deborah Cannon Wolfe Elementary participated in a SECME COMPETITION WORKSHOP that was held on December 1, 2012 on the campus of Tuskegee University.
SECME is an organization to serve under-represented groups in math and science. the mission statement is: To increase the pool of historically underrepresented and under-served students who will be prepared to enter and complete post-secondary studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); thus creating a diverse and globally competitive workforce.
students integrated mathematics and science concepts to design and build a mousetrap car. They also demonstrated basic physical laws and principles to build and launch water bottle rockets.

Our Scholastic Book Fair theme – All-Star Book Fair: Every Reader Is a Star! – is part of an exciting reading event that brings to school a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books will motivate them to read more. And like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they’ll get.
Reading is vital to every child’s success, and raising kids as readers means getting involved while they’re young. Now is the time. Since there will never be a substitute for a parent’s direct involvement in his/her child’s education, please make plans to visit our Book Fair. Hope to see you there!
